VACCINATING Shetland’s most vulnerable residents will get under way tomorrow morning (Thursday), the local health board has confirmed.

Confirmation of consent is now in place for Covid-19 vaccination to begin in six care homes, according to NHS Shetland. The remaining three care homes are expected to follow in coming days.

The vaccination programme will continue until the end of December and include the care homes on Whalsay, Unst and Yell after guidelines changed on Tuesday afternoon to allow the vaccine to be transported by inter-island ferry.

The programme using the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine got under way last Friday. Social care workers and NHS frontline staff have been the first to receive the jab.

A NHS Shetland spokesperson said: “Shetland has received enough vaccine so far for about 400 people and a large portion of these will be the most vulnerable residents of care homes along with the care home staff.”
