Island Games round-up: runners finish with final medal flourish

SHETLAND’S long and short distance athletes inspired silver success on the last day of the 2025 Island Games, as the blues closed out the competition with 17 medals.   • Man fined after police assaults and cell urination

    A LERWICK man who attacked two police officers and urinated in his police cell after a Christmas do has been fined and ordered to pay the cleaning costs. Denniss Bolbocanu, who is originally from Latvia but now lives in Robertson Crescent, also admitted abusing the police officers with homophobic terms on 14 December 2025. Read more

  • Skerries ferry out of action after rope wound up in propellor

    THE SKERRIES ferry Filla has been taken out of service after rope was wound up in her propellor. It comes as three other Shetland Islands Council ferries – the Geira, Daggri and Hendra – are currently out of action due to planned dry dock, reducing some services to a single vessel. Read more

    COUNCIL convener Andrea Manson has vowed to fight on and to try “clear her name” in the wake of a call for her to quit. In an interview with BBC Radio Shetland tonight (Tuesday), Manson said that she was going to “fall on my sword” and resign before receiving an “overwhelming” swell of public support. Read more

    MUSIC fans can start getting their diaries out and planning for the Shetland Folk Festival after the concert programme for this year’s event was released. Early membership holders will get the first chance to buy tickets on Monday 16 March. The festival is taking place between 30 April to 3 May. Read more
